10th Annual Cardboard Classic slated for January 23

Family Friendly Winter Fun at Lansing's Gier Community Center

January 21, 2016

LANSING, MICH. - LCC Radio, 89.7FM and the Lansing Parks & Recreation Department are teaming up once again to host the 10th annual Cardboard Classic on Saturday, January 23. Sled racing enthusiasts will come together for an annual winter event filled with creativity, races, and, sometimes, crashes. The light-hearted all-ages competition is a great way to get out of the house, spend time with friends and family, and enjoy Michigan’s winter season.

Since 2006, the Cardboard Classic has become one of Mid-Michigan's favorite wintertime festivities. Each year, sled builders manage to create bigger and better sled themes; last year’s entries included a Beatles-esque yellow submarine, giant Lego toboggan, a fire engine full of Cub Scouts, and two flying phoenixes. Attendance for last year’s event included more than 250 participants and spectators along with more than 50 cardboard sleds. The staff and volunteers of LCC Radio, 89.7FM and Gier Community Center will be handing out a number of awards including "Fastest Sled," "Best Wipeout," "Most Creative," and "People's Choice."

There is a $5 entry fee per sled with proceeds benefiting Lansing's community radio station and the Gier Advisory Board Youth Fund. Registration and judging begins at 1 p.m. with racing getting underway at 2 p.m. Spectators are welcome. For more information, visit or call 89.7FM at 483-1000.
