LCC Continues Effort to Increase High School Completion Rates

April 4, 2014

Lansing, MICH – Lansing Community College (LCC) is calling for applicants to join an Ingham and Eaton County initiative to increase completion rates for diplomas, associates degrees and program certificates.

The High School Diploma Completion Initiative (HSDCI) at LCC is a unique opportunity for mid-Michigan students who have disconnected from their high school to jump-start their education and career preparation. Students participating in the program take classes at LCC, taught by LCC instructors, and in return will receive a high school diploma from their home high school.

"Often by this point in the school year, teachers and counselors have a pretty good feel for those students that unfortunately are unlikely to graduate on time," said Kelli Hatfield, director of HSDCI. "With HSDCI, students are able to get the fresh re-start that they need. Furthermore, they are able to earn valuable college experiences and credits in tandem."

Typically, students arrive at HSDCI only half way through to their high school diploma and by the time they are finished with their diploma requirements, they are half way through a General Associate’s degree.

"HSDCI does not "market" or "recruit" for young people to drop-out or fall behind," Hatfield said. "We know that there is a very valuable opportunity here at LCC for these young people to succeed—we’re simply providing that option."

Unlike the GED, there is no cost for students. Tuition, books, and materials are provided and students can also earn money for food and transportation based on attendance. CATA passes are available to those that need them as well.

To be eligible for enrolling with HSDCI, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be between the ages of 16 and 19 (extensions for special education students with an IEP)
  • Must be enrolled or be able to reenroll in an Ingham or Eaton county high school
  • Must have completed at least 1/2 of the required high school credits needed to graduate from the host high school

To apply, complete the HSDCI Application Form at The application deadline for the Fall 2014 semester is May 28. For questions, call (517) 483-9707 or email
