Institutional Accreditation

Lansing Community College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), a regional accreditation agency that accredits degree-granting institutions of higher education located in the 19-state North Central region of the United States.  Regional accreditation validates the quality of an institution as a whole and evaluates multiple aspects of an institution, including its academic offerings, governance and administration, mission, finances, and resources.  Institutions that the HLC accredits are evaluated against the Commission’s Criteria for Accreditation, a set of standards that must be met in order for the institution to receive and/or maintain accredited status. The HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation reflect a set of guiding values.  Accreditation is largely a peer-based review and evaluation process. HLC decision-making bodies are comprised of institutional representation from colleges and universities accredited by the Commission; public members are also sometimes involved.

 What is AQIP?

The Higher Learning Commission provides three pathways or tracks through which its member institutions receive, reaffirm, and maintain accreditation: the Open Pathway, the Standard Pathway, and the AQIP Pathway.  Since the year 2000, LCC has been following the AQIP Pathway (AQIP = Academic Quality Improvement Program).  The AQIP Pathway requires institutions to participate in a number of reaccreditation activities over an eight-year cycle.  These activities include but might not be limited to:

Participation in required HLC Strategy Forums (Years 1-2 and Years 5-6)

Completion and submission of a Systems Portfolio: a comprehensive report providing an up-to-date account of how the institution plans, implements, reports, and uses relevant data towards meeting accreditation requirements (Years 3 and 7)

Review of a Systems Portfolio Appraisal: peer-related feedback regarding the institution’s portfolio report, noting strengths and opportunities for improvement (Years 3 and 7)

Identification, implementation, measurement, and reporting of improvement Action Plans (Years 1-8; institutions must be engaged in at least three Action Plans at all times throughout the eight-year cycle)

Participation in a Comprehensive Quality Review (CQR): a site visit to the institution conducted by a team of AQIP-trained peer reviewers (Year 8), culminating in Reaffirmation of Accreditation

Currently, LCC is entering Year 8 of the AQIP cycle.  As such, the College is presently preparing for a Comprehensive Quality Review (CQR) on April 25-27, 2016.
